Reading and Writing Assignments



Hello all!


How time flies! We had just opened the school year but little did we notice that 6 weeks have already gone by. The First Marking Period is ending on Friday, October 16, 2009!


So this week is really crunch time for many of us! Why? Deadlines...Deadlines....Deadlines...


As we end our Unit on Oral Tradition and Establishing Procedures in classs, allow me to go back to the lessons we had for ELA.


We started out with:



  • Class Norms


  • Students Goals based on the NYS Standards for ELA


  • Notebook Management


  • Oral Traditions

Folk tales/Folk songs/Tall tales/Legends/Fairy tales



  • 2 Elements of Short Stories

Imagery (What does the author wants me think about this image?)


Use of figurative language to enhance images from the story




  • Simile and Metaphor


  • Hyperbole


  • Personification

Mood (What is the feeling created by the imagery from the story)

  • List of Postive and Negative Mood Words

  • Book Report Formats (25 books to read and report for the school year)


  • Writing Assignment: Write a story told to you by a family member for our storytelling

Writing assignments must have drafts, revised papers and final paper that is typed:




  • 12 font size


  • 1.5 spacing

ALL REPORTS MUST BE TURNED IN ON OR BEFORE FRIDAY : OCT. 16, 2009

You will receive your partial ELA grade for the 1st Marking Period on Tuesday, Oct. 13.

The Central Park Trip is scheduled for Monday, October 19, 2009. Participation is based on meeting classwork,homework, reports and behavior in class.
