ELA STUFF

Dear One and All,

Happy New Year!! I'm so flabbergasted that Christmas snuck up and rushed away in a blink of an eye this year! I sucked at sending mails all my life and I'm worse this year. I got caught up with my "very challenging" scholars and for the most part of my time, it was them that I focused my energy to which is why I created this blog site.

Let me back track December 2009 before it disappears for eternity:)

We are in the last marking period for the Fall Semester which started December 4 and will end on January 29, 2010. Time isn't only flying, I tell you but it is warping like crazy!

90% of 801 students received their Christmas Reading Homework and for those who did not received them, rest assured you will have them on Jan. 5 and would have 6 days to complete the work. The rest of the class is expected to submit the work on the 5th.

I am hoping that letters the 8th grade team mailed to the parents for those who are in danger of not graduating Middle school have reached their homes for the family to sit down and talk to their child. The Promotion in Doubt will be officially submitted at the end of January so scholars have time to get their priorities right.

Here is a CHECKLIST of the ELA Graduation Requirements for your information and compliance:

  • 5 Book Reports which should have been graded and filed in their ELA Portfolio

  • 3 Writing Assignments

a. Family Story (First Marking Period)

b. Biography of a Famous Person and My Autobiography (Second Marking Period)

c. My Education Story and What Education Means to Me (Third Marking Period)

  • 5 Short Story Reports equivalent to 5 Book Reports (Formats Vary Weekly)

Note: Currently, we follow a "Friendly Letter Format" introducing a major character from the story "Born Worker" EMC Soft Cover. This is the Christmas homework which also includes characterization. Both reports MUST BE TYPED.

Lastly, Progress Reports for ELA will be out on January 9.

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL OF YOU AND MAY 2010 BE A BETTER YEAR FOR ALL OF US!!!

PEACE...PROSPERITY AND AN ABUNDANCE OF LOVE FOR ALL MANKIND!

Toodles,

Ms. Maria Acedo

ELA Stuff

Hello once again! I'm so excited to share with you a lesson I did with my scholars this week which also marks the ending of the 2nd Marking Period. How time flies so very fast like Superman :)
The lesson was about finding "Big Ideas" along with its "Supporting Ideas" from reading any informative text. First we read, dissected and discussed the text "The Emperor Lays an Egg" by Brenda Z. Guiberson using guided reading for comprehension purposes. Second, we looked for the Big Ideas using the structure of the text along with its content. Third, we came with 4 big ideas -Mother Emperor Laying and Leaving the Egg, The Father Emperor Looking After the Egg, The Egg Hatching and The Family Reuniting. Last, they were all set. When the Big Ideas were generated, I modeled how to determine how to identify the supporting details for each of these ideas. I did one sample and the class did the rest for independent work.

Next day, I gave them a new text: The Long Journey Home: The Life Cycle of the Sea Green Turtle. The task was to dissect the text the same way we did the previous day. Let me share with you some amazing work that my scholars did! Enjoy!

Ms. Acedo

Happy Black Friday!

My Edward Cullen :)
Belated Happy Thanksgiving to you all and a Happy Black Friday! Don't drop when you shop guys!

Yesterday was fun for me. It was pretty quiet...I went with my girlfriends for a Thanksgiving Breakfast (since we each have our own dinner plans as well) and went to see the matinee of New Moon! I watched with a few of my students last Wednesday but I had to see it again! I couldn't get over the realization that the movie was better than the book! For real and my apology Stephenie...the director this time did an awesome job.

The additional touches he made on the movie made it more convincing and real for me... I like the touch of "Misery" effect he did when Bella was very heartbroken... I could not help imagine how the actor from "Misery"( I cannot recall his name..) was typing his story and the season changes from the bay window as he typed...it was cool that the same effect had been added to New Moon. I must say that the undelivered e-mails of Bella to Alice also did wonders to the movie because it sealed the friendship between the two girls. The actions added during the Volturi scene along with the "Matrix" effects gave life to the discreet existence of vampires. Lastly, I must say that each of the characters had really meshed with the characters from the book. I could see Edward coming to life with all his machismo and charisma. Bella was becoming the funny Bella from the book who was also enchanting and mesmerizing. And Jacob...dear Jacob, buffed to fill in the role which he did so great... All of the characters specially, Jessica, trascends from the screen like the characters coming to life. With all these, I can't wait for the next installement next Thanksgiving..."Eclipse".... I wonder who will direct it this time.... Cameron? Spielberg? Jackson? or Lucas? Not to mention..."Breaking Dawn" which should be the most unforgettable of all the series! Please don't omit the honeymoon scence :)

Anyway, we came home very happy with our chick flick Thanksgiving date.

ORAL BOOK TALK

ANNE FRANK – THE DIARY OF A YOUNG GIRL By Maria Acedo

She was born on June 14, 1929 to a well off Jewish family in Frankfurt, Germany.

By the time she was 4 years old, her father, Otto Frank, migrated his family to Holland in 1933 when he was appointed Managing Director of Travis N.V., a sister company of Kolen & Company which he was a part owner. Anne has an older sister of three years named Margot.

Life for her family became difficult in 1938, when some members of her family moved to the US to escape the German Nazis. Her grandmother who she was very closed to lived with them until her death in January 1942. When Germany invaded Holland in 1940, life for them became more difficult because of the many anti-Jew laws that were enforced by Hitler who was one of the perpetrators of WW11.
Anne attended a prestigious school, Montessori Kindergarten in 1934 until she finished 6th grade. She later joined her sister, Margot, and attended the Jewish Secondary School.

There were a lot of challenges for Anne as early on in the novel that by the way was made from her diary entries.

First, Anne felt alone. Don't get her wrong, but she had a wonderful family, relatives and friends. However, at a very young age of 13, she felt she had no REAL friend who would be patient and honest enough to share her innermost thoughts, no matter how absurd or ridiculous they might be. Her circle of friends were only for fun and she could not find anyone in it who met her mind-serious and deep for the majority of the time. So, she created an ideal friend, patient and ever waiting, a diary she named "Kitty". It was on the pages of this cardboard covered notebook that she wrote of her thoughts far beyond her age mostly deep, melancholic, critical, funny and witty.

Second, Anne had trouble keeping her mouth shut in school. So one day, her Math teacher gave her a writing assignment entitled " The Chatterbox". She was very upset with this but she was clever enough to defend her side stating, "it is inherent for women to talk as part of their nature and that should not be eradicated. However, women must also be able to keep their mouths under control."

Third, Anne had to make the absolute sacrifice of surrendering her freedom by going with her family into hiding, if it were the only way to guarantee their survival. This was not an easy task for a teen-ager to do and she relieved herself of the situation by looking at it as a family vacation. She understood the purpose of the plan and was content with it for as long as it took.

Anne made a lot of accomplishments and one of them is being critical of her. When she acted like a brat, she reflected on her actions and talk to herself to be better. She never made any excuses for her misbehavior but treated the situation as a learning point to improve. For example, she was very open about upsetting Mr. Van Daan for the most part of the day but after every episode of the argument she would try her best to keep her opinion to herself to avoid confrontations. For a teen, to pull away from any adult to avoid confrontation is an accomplishment.

Another accomplishment I would share with you is that, Anne did not use
the situation to stop learning. She continued to educate herself by reading different books and studying new crafts. For example, she would request for new books to be delivered to her secretly through Miep or Elie, her fathers friends who know about the family secret. They both serve them as the family's link to the outside world. She also learned French and shorthand (a different form of writing used by secretaries to capture every word their bosses tell them when they write a letter of memorandum to the rest of their staff)

I would pause for now as I have not finished reading the diary-novel of this remarkable and magnificent girl. Until my next report.

P.S.
Remember the parts of your Book Talk:
  • Basic Personal Information about your subject
  • Issues/Concerns your subject faced and how they were resolved. You need to have three(3) with supporting details from the text and;
  • Achievements this person made (atleast 2) include supporting details from text and an explanation for each achievement in relation to its importance.

Take a closer look at my Anne Frank Sample Oral Book Talk and just follow the pattern. Be ready for your presentation on Thursday, Nov. 13, 2009. You have two (2) minutes for your presentation.

Toodles,

Ms. Maria Acedo

ELA STUFF

Good afternoon,

We had one period of class today and the period was alloted for the following objectives:

Renew their seating places

Know their reading partners

  • Pick an autobiography/biography book for their pair reading and report from the collection I have chosen from our classroom set.

Effects:

  • Many were not happy with the new arrangement, specially then one who was isolated from the group.

  • One girl who tried to distract the class with post it really disappointed me gravely.

  • Another girl who was overly dramatic with the situation tried to call attention to herself was another heart breaker because she doesn't behave like that at home. I know that for a fact.

  • One scholar received a legal document for his behavior.

  • Two girls came in late - one from the principal's office and one from the Dean.

  • I had to give a "speech" reminding them that they do not have any rght to call the shots in this class because they are not the one in charge. IT'S NOT HAPPENING IN MY CLASS!

  • One boy had to be told 5 times to start reading his book! I could not phrase the sentence in a simpler way than that.
At the end of the period, I gave them a chance to choose their own biography or autobiography books for independent reading because some were not happy about the selection they made due to the limited books we have in our library. They were told to go the public library and check a book of their choice similar from our independent reading study. We need to approve the book firt. There is a pair project based on the reading : Book Talk and Non-fiction Project due on Nov. 25, 2009 (Wednesday).

Ms. Adams and I have also set up an incentive for those who come late for our Mon and Thu sessions. For those who come on time, they get to participate to our Thanksgiving Raffle on 11/25. So the more entries they have, the better chances of winning! There are two major prizes at stake so you know what to do in order to join. BE ON TIME FOR ELA MONDAY AND THURSDAY CLASS!

ELA STUFF

(La Push Beach, Washington 8/20/09)

Hello again. I'm signing back to give everyone an update of my 801 ELA class for the week of Oct. 19-23. By the way, the class meets 8 times a week as follow:

  • Mondays and Thursdays from 8:00-9:37 (Lesson starts promptly at 8:00)

  • Tuesdays from 11:56-1:27

  • Wednesdays 12:42-1:27

  • Fridays from 12:42-1:27

The unit on non-fiction continued with questions, I formulated to help them focus on ir readings which is one of the strategies an active reader should do all the time. They are as follow:

  • What is the text about?

  • What does the author want me to think? (with support from the text)

  • What does the author want me to feel using our mood words on chart? (with text support)

  • What is the aim of the author for writing? (with supporting details from the text)

We did a sample on the article about "H1N1 Flu Virus" and the class was grouped impromptu to avoid bias. The task for the group was to create a tv ad campaigning for the prevention of the spreading of H1N1 Virus which the article discussed. Two days were given for the group to create the ad and the presentation was held last Friday, Oct. 23. It was the second quiz for the current marking period.

Rubrics for the ad are as follow:

  • Accuracy of the Information based on the article : 40 pts.

  • Creativity of the Ad : 20 pts.

  • Teamwork reflected from the presentation : 20 pts.

  • Originality of the Medium : 20 pts.

Total : 100 pts.

Three actors emerged from the presentation: James, Nazia and Reggie. (They can act!)

I want to upload photos Mr. Dennis, our paraprofessional, took from the presentation but I need to clear it up with my principal first for safety issues.

Till then... Ooops reminder guys! Oct. 30, 2009 is the deadline for your 3rd book reports! I do not have the template right now due to the xerox copier breakdown so, you need to create one for your report. Typing is the best way to go. Technology room is open daily from 3:00-4:30. You need to make your way there because many of you have not submitted the 2nd book report till now.

Toodles,

Maria Acedo

ELA STUFF

Hello everyone!

Our school has just started the 2nd Marking Period for the school year and for everyone's information, the Open School Night is scheduled on Nov. 16 from 5:00-7:30 p.m. which resumes the next day, Nov. 17 from 12:00 - 2:20 p.m. I am calling to invite parents to come and talk to the teachers regarding their child/children in school. I am encouraging parents to come and be involved with the education of their children.

Our unit for the next 7-8 weeks is on Non-Fiction. Yesterday, we have already discussed about the form, use and importance of reading non-fiction texts. Allow me to go into details.

Non-Fiction are writings about real people, places, things and events.

Forms of non-fiction are as follows:

  • Essays
  • Autobiographies/Biographies
  • News Stories
  • Speeches
  • Documentaries
  • History
  • How-to-books or manuals
  • Memoirs
Why do we NEED to read non-fiction?
  • Knowledge is power.
  • We use facts to use.
  • It helps us understand people, the past, cultures and be tolerant of the world through our understanding.
  • It helps us think critically or question the truth.
  • It gives us directions, guidance, inspiration and release.
  • It balances fiction.
  • It helps us find out more about ourselves.

Questions to ask during our non-fiction reading to monitor our comprehension of the text.

  • What is the text about? (Foucs on facts)
  • What does the text want me to think? (Focus on ideas/concepts)
  • What does teh text want me to feel? (Focus on emotions)

Aim is the writer's REASON(S) for writing a non-fiction text. (Why did the author write this piece?)

* to inform or to r eport about something that happened
* to entertain, amuse or enlightened

* to share a story
* to share his views or her views about a particular topic/subject

* A writer can have more than one aim in creating a work

We did a classwork today using the Health section of the Reader's Digest. The lesson was only 60% successful because even if the text was short, vocabulary became a big factor for some of my students to comprehend the text. Ms. Adams and I were able to come up with a contingency plan that we will be using for our next ELA session, tomorrow at 7th period.

Their homework for tonight is to go over the National Geographic booklet they read a few weeks back and complete a graphic organizer to help them prepare for their next writing assignment - Expository Writing!

Have a good evening to you all!

Toodles,

Ms. Maria Acedo

ELA STUFF : Our Class Today

Good evening. Before I turn in and call it a day, I want to talk about how my class went for 6th and 7th period. Usually, it is not the best time of the day as they have already been highly energized and by they time they get to my class, I have to be a "drill sargeant" to keep them in order.

Here are the highlights of the periods:

  • A listening quiz was given to make up for their unit test scores. Partial class standing grades have been given to each of them except for those who were absent (3 of them, i.e after a long weekend). They had listen to an African myth and answer 6 comprehension questions about it. It was ok, rocky but ok.

  • Period 7 was alloted for their Independent Reading as Book Report #2 deadline comes on Friday, Oct. 16 which also marks the end of the First Marking Period. Conferences were held for everyone which includes updates of reports they did not turn in or writing assignments (their family stories as retold by them) they have not fully completed or revised for publishing/grading. Only a handful were able to turn in their work and all of them need to be edited for final submission.

  • I have also returned their unit test papers-graded and scored including classwork on setting and mood which was also graded and scored.

  • Book Reports submitted lack quality reflecting little effort in its production and presentation. I hope many of you doing this will wake up to the reality that high school work will require you so much more. It is what it is.

  • Unfortunately, many of them are not paying serious situation about their school work which really makes me very sad but if that is the choice they make inspite all my guidance and help, consequences for these choices are inevitable.
  • Also thanks to a concerned guardian who came and conferenced with me after my phone call last Friday night. I appreciate the time and effort you gave to check on your child at school.
  • Lastly, Kudos to those who are making the most of their time in ELA....I admire your determination and unwavering perseverance. Keep the good study habits developing.

P.S

You want a taste high school? Ok. I have no problem with that.

ELA Stuff

Hello once again! One of our lessons last week was on the use of dictionary. The lesson had to be done because some of you did not know how to look up words using the dictionary. With the many readings that we will be doing in class, this is a skill that needs to be taught and mastered. So I am uploading the pages that we have discussed for your reference. Always remember: make sure you are on the page where the word you are looking for can be found! Look at the top of the page and check the guide words.
Study and commit to memory the following important terms:
  • Guide words
  • Entry words
  • Meanings
  • Pronunciation
  • History of the word (which language it originated)

We will continually visit this lesson until your use of dictionary becomes second nature!

Toodles,

Ms. Maria Acedo

ELA STUFF

Hello all. I want to discuss about the book report requirements for my ELA class. As per NY State standards, students are required to read 25 books for the whole school year (you may want to check out the NYC Dept of Ed. website for more of the ELA Standards). I give my class time for 20minutes reading during our ELA period EVERYDAY. Of course, this tme is not enough so I am asking parents to assist me by supervising their child at home and ensure that they are reading. A reading log is required after reading and this must be written in their ELA notebooks following the format I have explained and showed in class. Parents, we need to work together to invest in the future of our children. It takes a village to raise a child and we must be allies in this venture.

Below are sample documents that each of your child is required to do for his/her independent reading book report. This format expires after their 5th book report. On top is a Book Cover design that is part of the requirements for the Book Report.

A Rubric is given for grading the book report which is the end product of their reading. It specifies what I look for in evaluating the product proving they did the reading. I READ EVERY BOOK REPORT SUBMITTED BY A SCHOLAR.

SAMPLE BOOK REPORT FORMAT
BOOK COVER DESIGN SAMPLE IS ON TOP (THIS IS PART OF THE BOOK REPORT)

Name: Maria Acedo Grade: 8th Date: October 2, 2009

1. Title/Author/No. Of pages: “Dracula” by Bram Stroker (502 pages)

11. Setting: Carpathians, Transylvania and Carfax, London in 1800’s

111. Major Characters:

Count Dracula Quincy
Jonathan Harker Dr. Seward
Mina Murray Van Helsing
Lucy Westenra

1V. Summary:

A British solicitor, Jonathan Harker, was sent to Carpathians in Transylvania to assist a client, who made a huge property purchase from his real estate company in Carfax, London, where he wanted to relocate at the same time. The name of the client is Count Dracula. Jonathan Harker ended up being a prisoner of Dracula in his castle while the latter made his way successfully to London and make it his new haunting ground to feed.

He victimized Lucy Westenra, best friend of Mina Murray, who would become the wife of Jonathan Harker. As soon as Dracula bit the wealthy Lucy, she showed signs of health deterioration; so an expert doctor, Van Helsing, was called to attend to her. He suspected something different as soon as he laid his eyes on her neck, which showed two distinct little holes that seemed to be bite marks. He kept it to himself because little did everyone know that he knew of the existence of vampires, the dead who live by feeding on the blood of the living. Lucy died eventually and became a vampire but was killed by Van Helsing for good.

Van Helsing found out that Dracula was the root cause of the mysterious deaths of people in Carfax and sought the help of four other gentlemen to kill Dracula permanently. They haunted him while he tried to make his way back to his castle in his homeland, Transylvania, to renew his strength, but Van Helsing with his group of loyal friends apprehended Dracula who they eventually killed by plunging a cross into his chest and decapitating his head.

This sample book report format is to be followed. Book reports can be written but it needs to be readable and neatly done. However, if they choose to type it, the format must be retained. This format expires on the 5th book report for the current school year.

My Thoughts Per Se on Chapter 20: Volterrra

" Death that had sucked the honey of thy breath hath had no power yet upon thy beauty."

Romeo and Juliet

This chapter was heart pounding because of the vivid description and account of the author to the readers as she tried to paint a picture of the hurdles that Bella would have to overcome in saving the love of her life. It was a minute by minute account of Bella making a run despite her klutziness to save her lover on time. Can you imagine how she tried to navigate her way around that throng of people why focusing on Edward's location at the same time?

How sweet when they finally embraced again and Edward once again showed how he really felt for Bella. He had lost sense of reality thinking that he just died and came to heaven with Bella waiting for him in her warmth embrace. This chapter was just mushy! Awwww......true love is quite intoxicating! That goes for the picture as well :)

On a serious note:

Other vampire royalty was also introduced into this chapter which makes it more interesting.

Will they escape the verdict of the royal vampire leaders? Aro, Caius and Marcus....

My Thoughts Per Se on Chapter 19 Race

I'm back y' all! I will be blogging about this chapter which I refer to as Bella and Alice sealing the bonds of their friendship for good. It's really strange that when a loved one is in great danger, people who truly care for them will not have any second thoughts of saving them. This is really the power of love and exactly what our heroine, Bella, is about to do even if she will be grounded by Charlie for the rest of her life by leaving ( the second time around) the country without any permission and torturing Jacob's feelings for leaving him behind, literally and figuratively.

The plane conversation was hilarious and it only goes to show how girlfriends, who are true to their friendship, can open up to each other and comfort one another in time of need. When I read this chapter again for the nth time after spending time in Seattle, I felt a connection. The flight they took from Seattle to Georgia to New York can really make a traveler weary and 'suspended' in time when in transit up in the air.

The chapter also opened up a lot of relationships that were cared for and nurtured by the characters involved. Alice with Jasper and for all her other 'vampire siblings'; Bella with Edward

as well. It also showed the readers how powerful Alice's sixth sense was as she took us to every decision that Edward made in sealing his doom.

Lastly, woven into this chapter was the story of who and what the Volturi are to the vampires in the world. I think that part was very cool. The author was a genius in concocting that stylish lifestyle despite their means of surviving. However, I was thinking, with all the money that they have in the world, why don't they just set up a fake blood bank and have their "exotic juice" in stylish wine bottles as well? :p

Just a thought.

Toodles,

Sidebar # 6

Hi guys! I'm barely back to my blogsite! Ha!ha!ha! Seriously, I have been in hiatus for a little over a month. Yeah, I know I needed it since just a handfulwho came to visit my blog with two leaving one or two messages. Anyway, I did a week of study during my break in the lovely state of Vermont as well. However, the highlight of that hiatus is my trip to Seattle, Port Angeles, Forks and La Push, Washington! It was one of the memorable trips that I have so far!

It's surreal and whatever she said in the book about Forks and La Push were all true! It is green all over and even the air feels and smells green!

I had two 'spooky' experiences though....with a cruizer and a volvo! You know what I mean? What's the story? Well, when I see you in school and with my surprise as well. I promise to finish this blog site before school starts too. My reading notebook is almost done. I hope many of you are on the same page as I am.

Lastly, I want to share one photo with all of you here from my Seattle Trip!

Toodles,

My Thoughts in Pictures Per Se for Chapters 17 &18 : Visitor and Funeral

Headaches are not fun and I just had one yesterday so I kept out of the blog radar. I still haven't heard from hbtwilight78 yet and I am looking forward to hearing from you.
Anyway, today will be a little different in two ways. One, I have accidentally combined two chapters as in the title for this blog and two, I have put up pictures for my thoughts in these two chapters. So what's the catch?

You need to look at the pictures and arrange them in sequence to tell the summary of these chapters that I have combined! Come up with a description of the picture that will be related to the scene you are writing about for these chapters.
Where else will you leave your answers? Duh... in the post comment section!

Use this as your guide for the next entry!
